My ongoing project initially titled Fifty-five, is a documentative exploration into the lives of the British Army Reserves. The Reserves were formed in 1908 by Richard Haldane, the Secretary of State for War, with the job role of providing another line of defence for the Expeditionary Force. Since their conception, the Army Reserves have gone through several changes in role and name however their core aim remains the same; to help support the Regular Army in any capacity including, where necessary, to fight and protect the United Kingdom. The title of the project comes from the Reserves commitment to defending the nation with the Army having the prerogative to call upon any former or current Reserve soldier until the age of Fifty-five.
I worked with the soldiers to create poignant and intimate portraits while juxtaposing them with documentary photographs of the soldiers undertaking their role.
